Davidson Parks & Recreation offers a wide variety of summer camps for all age levels. The camps offer entertaining, educational experiences in such areas as arts, sciences and sports. Registration for Davidson residents begins March 16, with financial aid available for residents only. Registration for non-residents begins on March 23. Camps cost between $55.00 and $200.00.
The Rupert T. Barber Summer Workshop Series is offering week-long camps in the new Armour Street Theatre. Campers will learn the basics of acting and putting on a play; together they will create a play of their own to perform for friends and family. Older campers can audition for more advanced workshops. All camps cost $80 except for a two-week advanced session for ages 13 and up, which costs $100. Financial aid is available. Directed by Davidson soccer coaches Matt Spear and Greg Ashton, the three-decade-old Davidson Soccer Camp teaches soccer to individuals and teams of grades K through 12. Discovery Place is holding science camps in Huntersville for rising grades K through 5. Held at the Lake Norman Charter School and at the Huntersville Arts and Cultural Center, the camps cover topics such as dinosaurs, outer space, and the animal kingdom. The Raptor Center at Latta Plantation will be offering a series of summer camps for fans of nature and the outdoors. The camps available include Wings of Wonder (ages 7-10), Hawkwarts: A Camp for Muggles (ages 8-12), and Radical Raptor Adventures (ages 11-14), and involve a mix of canoeing, horseback riding, and learning about birds. The camps run for one week, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm each day. They cost $199 for Carolina Raptor Center Members, and $249 for non-members. The Dance Davidson studio is putting on summer camps for children ages 3 to 12. Themes for the camps include Dora, Mary Poppins, Fairy Camp, and Jasmine Princess Camp and Belle Princess Camp. St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 301 Caldwell Lane off Concord Road, offers an evening vacation bible school – “Surfin’ Through the Scriptures” for children ages 3 to rising fifth graders. It will run June 22-25, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $25 per child, $40 maximum per family. For more information, call the church office, 704-892-0173. Each evening will begin with a supper. Father David Buck will lead a bible study group for adults, and there will be intergenerational skits.
The private school at Griffith and Jetton streets offers weekly camps, with activities that include Mad Science, arts & crafts, sports and games, team-building, waterplay, trips, music and dance. Lake Norman YMCA Day Camp offers weeklong camps from June 1 to Aug. 21.
Programs included standard camp activities like swimming, sports and water fun or specialty areas like arts and drama, babysitting, science and gymnastics. Serving preschoolers to rising 10th graders, the Lake Norman YMCA will provide campers with a wide range of activities that will help your camper make healthy choices, build personal skills, become a servant leader and stay active this summer.
