Davidson College has raised $1 million for a new scholarship honoring the late Wildcat All American Mike Maloy, and picked current player De’Mon Brooks as the scholarship’s first winner.
Maloy, who led Davidson to appearances in the NCAA Elite Eight in 1968 and 1969, died in April 2009 in Austria, where he had lived for years.
Brooks is a Charlotte native who starred at Hopewell High School before coming to Davidson. He’s a rising junior who was voted Southern Conference Player of the Year last season.

Davidson men’s basketball forward De’Mon Brooks has been named Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention.
Brooks was voted the Southern Conference Player of the Year by the league’s coaches and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the conference tournament in leading Davidson to its 11th tournament title and NCAA appearance. Read the full story

Davidson College’s men’s basketball team lost to Creighton, 102-92, in the second round of the College Basketball Invitational at Omaha, Neb., Monday night.
Doug McDermott led the Bluejays with 31 points in a big-shooting game for both teams. Antoine Young had 22, and Josh Jones added 21.
De’Mon Brooks led the Wildcats with 21 points, well above his 8.6 points per game season average. The freshman guard from Charlotte, who starred at Hopewell High School, hit 7 out of his 12 field goal attempts and 7 of 10 free throws. JP Kuhlman had 19 points and 7 assists, while Jake Cohen added 16 points.
The loss ended the Cats’ season at 18 wins and 15 losses. Read the full story
