Summit Coffee in downtown Davidson will host is annual Summit Solstice 4-miler and festival this Saturday, June 8, and this year the event comes with a twist – it’s an “Obstacle Challenge.” Also this weekend, W.A. Hough High School in Cornelius is the site for the the North Carolina AAU District Track & Field Championships on Saturday and Sunday. Meanwhile, MSC Industrial Supply Co., which will open a co-headquarters in Davidson this summer, has signed on as the lead sponsor for the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s September Run for Green races. A pair of 16-year-olds – David Hager of Davidson and Sydney Bowman of Cornelius – were the top finishers Friday night in the Summit Coffee Tacky 10K on Davidson streets and greenways. On Saturday morning, two 17-year-olds battled it out in the Andrew Lovedale 5K at Davidson College, with James Gregory outrunning Stephan Snyder by a second, in 19:02. Where did Steph Curry finish? What kind of shape are you in this summer? The end of summer racing season is here, offering long and short tests for area runners. Two races are planned in Davidson Aug. 31-Sept. 1 – Summit Coffee’s Tacky 10K and 1 mile fun run on Friday night, and the Andrew Lovedale 5K on the Davidson College cross country trails on Saturday. Former North Mecklenburg standout Kalib Wilkinson opened up a 500-yard lead in the first mile and never looked back, winning Saturday’s Run for Green half marathon by 12 minutes, in 1 hour 10 minutes 6 seconds. Winston-Salem’s Molly Nunn pulled off a similar feat in the women’s race, winning by near six minutes and finishing fourth overall in 1:22:40.

The two elite runners were among a total of 776 who registered for the half-marathon (13.1 miles) as well as 5K and 10K races along Davidson’s streets and greenways. Two of North Carolina’s top runners – Molly Nunn and Kalib Wilkinson – have signed to compete in the 2011 Run for Green half-marathon in Davidson on Saturday, Sept. 17. Registration is still open for the day’s races, which also include 10K and 5K runs on Davidson’s streets and greenways.
The Run for Green is an annual fund-raiser for Davidson Lands Conservancy, a nonprofit group that works with land owners to preserve open space. Director Roy Alexander said the organization has received about 360 entries, which at this point would be fewer than 2010. He encourages runners to sign up as soon as possible. Read the full story

Stephen Spada of Charlotte outran more than 150 other competitors in the Run for Green half-marathon Saturday morning in Davidson. The 45-year-old runner clocked 1 hour, 18 minutes, 53 seconds, finishing five minutes ahead of his closest rival. Lisa Mulvey of Charlotte won the women’s division of the 13.1-mile race, in 1:33:15.
About 600 total runners competed in the half-marathon as well as 5K and 10K races, starting and finishing on the Village Green. The event is an annual fund-raiser for Davidson Lands Conservancy.
