Spent the weekend in Asheville before driving back to Florida. Some thoughts:
1. It’s an exception if a college coach sticks around. There’s always a bigger crowd or contract if you’re good. There’s always a thanks but no thanks if you’re not. Brooks named tourney MVP; Cohen, Kuhlman join him on all-tourney team

With 1:04 left in the second overtime of Monday’s Southern Conference championship game, Clint Mannhit what turned out to be the game-winning shot for Davidson. Taking a pass on the right side, he saw the road to the hoop wide open and took it. He slammed home a dunk to make the score 93-91. Read the full story

Clint Mann found an opening in the lane for a dunk with just over a minute left, and Davidson’s men’s basketball team held on in the last few seconds of the second overtime to beat Western Carolina, 93-91, for the Southern Conference men’s basketball tournament championship Monday night in Asheville.
The victory lifts the Wildcats to 25-7 overall this season and sends them to the NCAA tournament for the first time since the dream season of 2008. That year, Stephen Curry led the Cats to an appearance in the Elite Eight. Read the full story

ASHEVILLE – Jake Cohen and De’Mon Brooks combined for 44 points and 11 rebounds, and Davidson held Elon without a field goal for 11:03 in the second half to earn an 83-67 victory in the semifinal round of the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament at the U.S. Cellular Center Sunday night.

ASHEVILLE - No. 4 seed Samford held off No. 1 Davidson, 62-51, in the opening semifinal game at the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Championship Sunday. The Bulldogs built a 36-16 lead by halftime to out-distance the Wildcats.
The loss ends the Wildcats’ season at 22-9 overall, 17-3 in the Southern Conference. Samford (19-12, 12-8 SoCon) advances to Monday’s final against Appalachian State. Read the full story

ASHEVILLE – Sophomore Laura Murray led three Wildcats in double figures with a game-high 22 points, and Davidson used a pair of runs in the first and second half to advance to the semifinals of the women’s basketball Southern Conference Tournament with a 69-58 win over Wofford at the Justice Center on Saturday. There’s a different feeling in the air this March among Davidson basketball fans, don’t you think? The Wildcat men and women won regular season titles in the Southern Conference, and both supplied the league’s Players of the Year and Coaches of the Year. And they have high hopes as they head to this weekend’s league championships in Asheville.
Saturday is the big day for both teams, which because of their first place finishes earned byes in the Friday’s first round. Read the full story
