Davidson’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are on the road Saturday, Jan. 23. The women travel to Boone for a 1 p.m. game vs. Appalachian State. The men are in Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern.

Davidson Day (14-3) has wasted no time putting its brand new gym to good use. Friday, the private prep school will host basketball powerhouse United Faith in games that will feature several highly scouted players.
The girls varsity will play at 6 p.m., followed by the boys varsity at 7:30 p.m., in what is expected to be a sell-out game.

Western Carolina built a 22-point halftime lead (44-22) and then held off a big Davidson comeback in the second half to take at 77-67 Southern Conference men’s basketball victory Wednesday night at Belk Arena.
The win kept the Catamounts atop the Southern Conference Northern Division with a 5-1 record. Their record is now 15-3 overall. Davidson fell to 8-11 overall and 3-4 in the league.
Davidson dug itself a big hole in the first half, trailing 44-22 at the break. But they battled back in the second half, coming as close as 4 points (60-56) with 5:43 left. But they couldn’t get any closer.
Ben Allison was the high point for Davidson, scoring 15 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Brendan McKillop scored 13 points and JP Kulman scored 11 for the Cats.
For Western Carolina, Jake Robinson led the scoring with 20 points. Brandon Giles scored 19 points and got 8 rebounds.
The Wildcats gave up 15 turnovers, to just 8 for Western Carolina.
AWAY GAME SATURDAY
Davidson plays again Saturday, traveling to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern. Game time is 2 p.m.
Next week, they are back at Belk Arena Thursday, Jan. 28, for the annual “Blackout Belk” night - when fans are encouraged to don black T-shirts. T-shirt sales and a portion of online ticket sales from that game will go to Davidson-based nonprofit Circle de Luz.
