Davidson College freshman Julia Singley knocked in her third goal of the season, but East Carolina’s women’s soccer team came away with a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats on a rainy Friday night at Alumni Stadium.

Singley’s goal in the 83rd minute helped the Cats (1-2-1) cut their deficit in half, but they never were able to get another clean shot on goal the rest of the way.

ECU (3-1) got the game-winning goal off the foot of Mackenzie Semerad in the 65th minute to improve to 3-0 in the all-time series vs. Davidson. Continue Reading

Two of North Carolina’s top runners – Molly Nunn and Kalib Wilkinson – have signed to compete in the 2011 Run for Green half-marathon in Davidson on Saturday, Sept. 17. Registration is still open for the day’s races, which also include 10K and 5K runs on Davidson’s streets and greenways.

The Run for Green is an annual fund-raiser for Davidson Lands Conservancy, a nonprofit group that works with land owners to preserve open space. Director Roy Alexander said the organization has received about 360 entries, which at this point would be fewer than 2010. He encourages runners to sign up as soon as possible. Continue Reading

CORNELIUS – Judging by the scoreboard, William A. Hough High’s second year of football isn’t off to the same sizzling start as its inaugural season. A year ago, the first-year Huskies won their opening two games, while this year’s squad is 0-2.

Yet one can’t help noticing Hough football coach Bobby Collins’s optimism as he discusses this year’s team.

FAYETTEVILLE - Davidson Day School’s football team rolled to another another big win on Monday, crushing Trinity Christian 62-34 in a game that had been postponed three days because of Hurricane Irene.
