Fourteen-year-old high school freshman Malia Ellington of Cornelius went out with a pack of runners and then pulled away to win the Town Day Spartan 5K road race on the Davidson greenway and streets Saturday. Her time of 19 minutes flat beat the field of 212 runners, including the top men in the race.
Martin Harrison, 50, of Davidson was 16 seconds back in second place as the top male finisher. Bobby Aswell, 49, of Cornelius was third in 19:26.
“I took it out a little fast. I started out with a few people in the top pack,” Ellington said afterward. In mid-race, she was able to pull away from most of the pack, and eventually opened an insurmountable lead.
Ellington, a freshman at Community School of Davidson, has been running since she was in fifth grade, and now competes for CSD, which will be eligible for state competition next year. “I just really like to run,” she said. Continue Reading








Bobby Aswell of Cornelius was the top fisher in the Pawz Too Run 10K in Davidson Saturday, edging Mooresville’s Jeremy Alsop by four seconds. Courtney Ellenbarger of Cornelius was the top woman in the race.
