The event raised at least $77,000 for the Ada Jenkins Center, a regional social service center in Davidson.

The tournament included 32 foursomes matching one celebrity and three amateurs. Besides the Currys, other big names out on the course Monday afternoon included former Charlotte Hornet Muggsy Bogues, former NFL players Phil Crosby, Frank Garcia, Tim McKyer, and Adrian Murrell, Carolina Panthers broadcaster Eugene Robinson, and the radio Voice of the Davidson Wildcats, John Kilgo.

(David Boraks/DavidsonNews.net)

Stephen Curry’s foursome included several representatives from sponsor Profit Insight, and a bonus guest: Steph’s wife, Ayesha Curry, who we watched taking putts.

“Steph and Dell are the greatest,” said Georgia Krueger, executive director of the Ada Jenkins Center, which service families in need from around the Lake Norman area.

We tracked Krueger down as she was doing a radio interview with hosts from WFNZ, The Fan, which was broadcasting live from the tournament.

She was celebrating the day, both the event and the conditions. “We’re thankful that the weather turned out to be absolutely fabulous,” Krueger said.

“The folks who are here and the sponsors have been so generous,” she added.

The $77,000 raised was a preliminary figure and could go higher. A group from Merrill Lynch was planning to challenge other participants to make additional pledges during the tournament dinner Monday night, Krueger said.

Besides Profit Insight, other sponsors included Cornerstone Financial Partners, Carlisle & Gallagher, Ivester Jackson, Hendrick Automotive and Joe Gibbs Racing.

KANNAPOLIS – Davidson resident and amateur Spencer Lawson shot a final round 1-under-par 70 on Thursday to win the 49th Toshiba-CBI North Carolina Open golf championship at The Club at Irish Creek.

Lawson had a four-stroke lead going into the final round after a 67 in Tuesday’s opening round and a tournament-best 65 (-6) on Wednesday. His three-round total of 202 was 11 under par and three strokes ahead of Jeffrey Peck, the head PGA Professional at Carolina Golf Club in Charlotte.

“I really thought I could win this one,” said Lawson, who golfs for Arizona State University. “Coming from NCAAs where I beat the number one player in the country from the University of California, I think I got my confidence back up to where it used to be.”

Lawson won a television from title sponsor Toshiba and a $550 gift certificate for the pro shop at the Club at Irish Creek.

As the top pro in the field, Peck won a $4,000 share of the $37,000 championship purse and added 150 points in the competition for 2013 CPGA Bob Boyd Player of the Year.

Tim Straub of Huntersville was tied for second through two rounds. He wound up tied for 12th at 1-under par 212.

This year’s North Carolina Open saw an atypically large percentage of amateurs making the cut – half of the competitors who played in Thursday’s final were amateurs. Lawson’s victory was only the seventh by an amateur in the 49-tournament history. The last amateur champion of the North Carolina Open was Scott Harvey in 2011.
