Despite loss, coach Collins sees signs of hope in his first-year team

With a 3-2 record at the halfway point of the football season, the Vance Cougars are way ahead of where they were this time last year.
“As poorly as we’ve played at times, compared to 1-4 (last season), we have a winning record and last week we beat Independence for the first time in the history of the school,” Vance coach Phil Culicerto said Friday after his team topped the .500 mark with a 29-0 victory at Hough High stadium in Cornelius. “I’ll take that.”

CORNELIUS – Garinger High scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, including one off a fumble recovery, and then held off Hough High’s Huskies the rest of the way to win 21-10 Saturday night in Cornelius.
Behind quarterback Ronnie Stinson, the Wildcats rushed for 222 yards, passed for another 28, and controlled the ball for much of the game, giving the Huskies few chances to score.
The win lifted Garinger to 2-2 on the year. Hough fell to 2-1. Read the full story

Behind the fleet feet of running back Quantarius Jordan, Hough High’s Huskies football team is at home again this weekend, hosting Garinger High Saturday night. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Hough stadium on Bailey Road in Cornelius.

CORNELIUS – Hough High’s Huskies played their first-ever home football game Friday night, beating Waddell High’s Raiders 16-0 before a near-capacity crowd of students and other fans. The win lifted the Huskies to 2-0 on the year, after an opening game victory over Rocky River.

A new Cannon School tradition will begin Aug. 14 when the school’s first varsity football team takes on Hickory Grove. The Cougars will play their inaugural game at the Hickory Grove Jamboree, beginning at 7 p.m.
“The members of this first team are embarking on a unique journey and will make history every single day on the practice and game fields,” said Head Coach Donnie Hayes, who joined Cannon School in 2008 to lead the development of the school’s first football program. Read the full story
