Membership in the Davidson College Athletics Hall of Fame will pass the 100 mark in February when the college inducts a new class of five alumni. The newest members were announced Monday: Mary Shell Brosche Zaffino (Class of 2000, swimming and diving), Ryan Crawford (2001, football), the late Jeff Frank (1966, men’s tennis coach), Philip Koonce (1956, men’s track) and Alan Lewis (1988, baseball).
The 23rd Hall of Fame class will be inducted Feb. 4, beginning with a ceremony at halftime of the men’s basketball game against Chattanooga. That game tips off at 4 p.m. A Hall of Fame reception is planned after the game at 6:30 p.m. in the Chambers building’s Lilly Family Gallery. Following the reception, a Hall of Fame dinner and program will begin at 7:15 p.m.
With the induction of these five honorees, the total number of Hall of Fame members is now 101, according to Davidson athletics officials. Here’s more about this year’s class: Read the full story

Vanderbilt outlasted Davidson 87-83 Wednesday night in a game that could have gone the other way if not for missed free throws and poor three-point shooting by the Wildcats.
Davidson set up an exciting finish, erasing most of an 18-point deficit late in the second half on key baskets and foul shots by De’Mon Brooks, JP Kuhlman and Nik Cochran. But after key three-pointers fell short and Clint Mann missed two free throws with a minute left, the Cats could only get within four points in the final seconds. Read the full story

Mike Zandler, an assistant baseball coach who helped improve pitching at Davidson College over the past five years, has been named head coach at the University of Illinois Springfield, the university announced Monday.
Meanwhile, Davidson basketball player Jake Cohen was named Player of the Week in the Southern Conference for games played though Monday. Read the full story

NASCAR driver Kurt Busch of Mooresville is on the way out from Penske Racing. The racing team announced the move in a news release Monday. The news comes after NASCAR recently fined Busch $50,000 for an angry outburst at an ESPN reporter in Miami.

Five Davidson players scored in double figures and the Wildcats hit 25 of 29 foul shots to beat Furman in a men’s basketball game at Belk Arena Saturday night.
Jake Cohen and JP Kuhlman both had 16 points, De’Mon Brooks and Nik Cochran had 15 each, and Chris Czerapowicz added 13 points to lead the Cats. Read the full story
