CORNELIUS – With one game remaining in the regular season, the Hough football team’s 2011 playoff possibilities are far from certain. A logjam in the I-MECK 4A Conference standings has created multiple playoff scenarios to be determined by the results of this week’s games, which will be played Friday night, Oct. 28.
As it stands, seven teams are still mathematically eligible for the conference’s five automatic playoff bids. Depending on Friday night’s outcome, Hough (4-6 overall, 3-3 in the I-MECK 4A) could finish anywhere from third to sixth place. With four wins this season, a wild card spot is still an option for the Huskies if they finish outside the top five in the standings. Read the full story

The University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and Davidson College men’s basketball teams are the pre-season favorites to win their divisions in the Southern Conference this winter. That’s according to a vote of the league’s head coaches, who also picked Appalachian State senior guard Omar Carter as the league’s Preseason Player of the Year.

Davidson goalkeeper Chip Sanders received his most prestigious honor to date Wednesday, as he was named the Disney Soccer/NSCAA Player of the Week for Oct. 26 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Sanders earned a pair of 1-0 shutouts against No. 2 North Carolina and Wofford lastweek, making seven saves in each game.
Sanders, from Thomasville, Ga., now has eight shutouts on the season, tying a Davidson single-season record. Read the full story

CONCORD – The Cannon School varsity girls’ golf team made history Monday in Greensboro when sisters Annie and Kate Collom, both of Davidson, Taylor Bunter of Concord, and Anna Redding of Concord shot a combined 232 to win the inaugural North Carolina independent schools girls’ golf state championship. W.A. Hough High School beat Lake Norman High, 2-1, in a boys’ soccer game Monday at Hough in Cornelius. The win means Hough has at least a tie for the I-MECK 4A conference championship, and the top seed in the regional playoffs.
Also Monday, North Mecklenburg beat Mooresville, 3-2, on a goal by Brad Davis in overtime.
