CORNELIUS – David Smith was raving about his players on the girls’ soccer team at Hough High on Tuesday afternoon, showering praises on them for being so focused and driven as they prepared for their first-round playoff game in the 4A North Carolina State playoffs on Wednesday, May 8.
Then, the expression on his face turned to one of surprise.
“Hey,” Smith yelled towards his players on the Hough High football field. “Just because I’m talking to a reporter doesn’t mean you relax.” Read the full story

Davidson Day used a three-run fourth inning to beat Hickory Christian, 3-1, on Monday and capture the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA) baseball championship.
Davidson Day’s John Goss was named the tournament most valuable player, recording wins in both the semifinal against Victory Christian and Monday’s final against Hickory Christian. Davidson Day’s Taylor Cox, Adam Sapp, and Lamar Briggs also made the all tournament team. Read the full story

W.A. Hough High School’s baseball team won the I-Meck conference baseball championship Monday night with a 1-0 victory over Hopewell High at UNC Charlotte.
Meanwhile, Hough’s girls’ softball team fell to Lake Norman, 9-7, in their I-Meck league final Monday.

Davidson-based Olympian Anthony “Fam” Famiglietti easily won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Duke Twilight track and field meet in Durham Sunday night as he continues tuning up for this summer’s U.S. Olympic Trials.
