CHARLOTTE – Tickets went on sale Thursday afternoon for that big international soccer match to be held this summer at Bank of America Stadium. It’s Italy’s AC Milan vs. British Premiere League power Liverpool FC, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2, at 6:30pm.
The match is part of the 2nd annual Guinness International Champions Cup, which wraps up with finals in Miami on Monday, Aug. 4. Tickets will run $48 to $300.
Relevent Sports is promoting the tournament, which includes matches in New York, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, and Phoenix.
Also involved in the local organizing are the City of Charlotte and Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority.
“Hosting a match of this caliber, that will be televised internationally, is yet another way to showcase Charlotte to the world,” Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon said in a press release. “Sports tourism is a proven economic driver and an ongoing priority for the Queen City. With a region full of soccer fans, this is a game people will travel for and we look forward to hosting them.”
The game is possible in part because of the city’s deal with the Carolina Panthers to provide five free dates a year to the visitors authority. The city says the dates are aimed at luring major events with “sizable economic impact for the community.”
“We’re incredibly proud and excited to host AC Milan and Liverpool in Charlotte,” visitors authority CEO Tom Murray said in the press release. “It’s an event that not only energizes the city’s thriving soccer community, but it also becomes a considerable draw that will bring visitors to our city who will dine in our restaurants, stay in our hotels and experience the vibrancy that Charlotte has to offer.”
The Charlotte game also will air on Fox Sports 2.
The Guinness International Champions Cup also will include six other top international clubs: Real Madrid CF, Manchester United, Manchester City, AS Roma, Inter Milan, and Olympiacos.
