Jimmy Boyd pitched a one-hitter to lead Middle Creek over Hough, 2-0, in the first game of their NCHSAA Division 4A baseball championship series Friday night in Durham. Game 2 of the best-of-three series will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. If the Huskies tie the series at 1-1, the deciding game will be at 8 p.m.
Boyd had eight strikeouts and allowed only one Hough runner to reach base in the game, according to a game summary from the N.C. High School Athletic Association. That was a single by Eric Siler in the sixth inning.
The Mustangs, from Apex, scored one run in both the fifth and sixth innings to beat the Huskies. Diego Guerrero smacked a run-scoring double in the fifth. And Austin Parker drove in the second run in the sixth with a single.
Pitcher Brandon Gragilla got the loss for Hough, allowing five hits, striking out five and walking one.
Middle Creek improved 25-7. Hough, a school only in its second year, is now 23-11 and had a nine-game winning streak snapped. Both teams are in the NCHSAA baseball finals for the first time, according to NCHSAA.
