ASHEVILLE – De’Mon Brooks, Chris Czerapowicz and Tyler Kalinoski each netted 17 points, and Davidson advanced to the semifinals of the men’s basketball Southern Conference Tournament with a 73-54 win over Furman on Saturday evening in the U.S. Cellular Center.
The Wildcats (23-7) will face Elon in the second semifinal at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be televised live on ESPN3 and SoCon TV.
Czerapowicz and Kalinoski combined to hit eight of the ‘Cats 10 three-balls and Davidson shot 47 percent as a team.
Kalinoski’s 17 points were a career-high, and the freshman scored 14 of those in the second half.
Furman (15-16) was led by a pair of 10-point outings from Charlie and Colin Reddick. The Paladins shot 37.7 percent in the game, including 5-of-15 from behind the arc, and committed 16 turnovers.
Furman worked a 16-point Davidson lead down to 10 after Charlie Reddick scored on a drive to the basket, was fouled and hit the free throw. The Wildcats responded with a decisive 8-0 run, capped by consecutive Kalinoski triples, to make the margin 62-44 with just over four minutes left.
The first half saw Czerapowicz and Brooks each score four points as the Wildcats jumped out to an 11-4 lead 3:49 into the contest. Jake Cohen then scored four points and Brooks added five in a 9-4 Wildcat run that made the advantage 23-10 midway through the frame.
The cushion grew to as many as 16 points on consecutive Will Reigel layups. But Furman outscored Davidson 8-2 the rest of the half, and the Wildcats led 37-27 at the break.
The ‘Cats scored the first six points of the second half to push the margin back to 16. The game went back and forth from there until an 8-2 Paladin spurt trimmed the cushion to 10 at 54-44.
