Davidson’s men’s basketball team is about to begin its Southern Conference season to begin in earnest, with 14 straight games over the next two months, but some prognosticators are already seeing a post-season ahead for the Wildcats.
Ryan Fagan of The Sporting News on Tuesday offered early picks for the NCAA Division I basketball tourney field of 68. And he ranks Davidson as a No. 15 seed.
Fagan notes that the rankings are based only on games played so far this season, as well as rating percentage index, or RPI – a measure of the difficulty of a team’s schedule. Davidson was picked as the Southern Conference entry in the NCAA field on the strength of its RPI.
Davidson might also warrant a mention because of its Dec. 19 80-74 upset of Kansas, which is predicted as a No. 4 seed in The Sporting News ranking.
Oh, and no surprise here: Both Duke and Carolina are predicted as No. 1 seeds in the rankings.
CATS AT GREENSBORO THEN HOME SAT.
Davidson is on the road Thursday night, facing UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m. at Greensboro Coliseum. Then the Cats are back home Saturday, hosting Georgia Southern at 3 p.m.
