Jake Keator’s strike from 25 yards out in the 82nd minute was the difference as Davidson scored a 1-0 upset victory over No. 2 North Carolina in non-conference men’s soccer action Monday night before a record crowd of 1,941 in Alumni Stadium.
Sophomore Alex Givens found Keator open, and Keator maneuvered past a pair of defenders and sent a laser into the top right corner of the net. Davidson, which just had one win in its past six outings, improved to 6-6-2, while North Carolina fell to 11-2-1.
Senior goalkeeper Chip Sanders made seven saves for his career-high seventh shutout of the season. Carolina outshot Davidson 16-3 for the game, controlling the majority of the possession.
The win over North Carolina was Davidson’s first since 2002, when the Cats won 1-0 at Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels won the teams’ last match in 2003, beating Davidson 1-0 at Alumni Stadium.
Davidson head coach Matt Spear was at the helm for both games, giving him a 2-1 record against UNC. “It’s stunning, it’s exhilarating,” Spear said afterward in a video interview. He credited the defense limiting North Carolina’s shots and goalie Sanders for his work in net.
North Carolina’s only other loss this season was at Virginia Tech, 1-0.
The win was the Wildcats’ first over a Top-10 team since 2009, when they earned a 4-1 win over No. 6 Duke.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Alumni Stadium, hosting Southern Conference foe Wofford.
