Independence holds off Hough in opener, 38-33

CORNELIUS – Hough High School scored 21 points in a fourth-quarter comeback, but it wasn’t enough as the Huskies fell 38-33 to Independence High School in the 2011 football season opener Friday night in Cornelius.
The Huskies’ trailed 17-2 at halftime, but scored 31 points in the second half to get within five points of the Patriots. The second half spurt included two touchdown runs by Jackson Campbell, and three touchdown passes by quarterback Josh Stilley.
In other action Friday night, Olympic High edged North Mecklenburg High, 44-42, [2] in Huntersville.
HOUGH SURGES
With 11:50 minutes left in the game an Independence touchdown pass put the Patriots up 31-12. Then Hough went to work.
With 10:11 remaining, Stilley hit wide-receiver Brandon Mobley with a 29-yard TD pass, and the extra point made it 31-19. Independence scored again with 7 1/2 minutes left, making it 38-19, then the Huskies drove again.
With just under 5 minutes to go, Campbell scored on a two-yard TD run, and the point after made it 38-26. On the kickoff, Hough recovered an onside kick, and began another drive. With 3:21 remaining, Stilley three a 3-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Nick Burrow. With the extra point, it was 38-33.
The Huskies forced the Patriots to punt on their next possession, and regained the ball with 2:15 left. A minute later, the Huskies converted a fourth-down and 9 yards to go situation with a 32-yard pass completion. But as time was running out, Independence intercepted a pass, to end the Huskies’ comeback, and the game.
Stilley ended the game with two touchdown passes and three interceptions, and was sacked four times. He completed 23 of 42 passes for 264 yards and rushed four times for 13 yards. Jackson had 18 carries for 142 yards.
Several Huskies’ receivers had good nights, despite the loss. Mobley had 7 catches for 92 yards, Sanders Poff had 4 catches for 72 yards, and Burrow had 8 for 57.
On defense, safety Nate Mays was responsible for 9 tackles and had an interception. Grant Bushinski (6 tackles), Ben Craig (5) and Jared Sobo (4) also chipped in.
Hough is on the road next week, playing at Myers Park High School in Charlotte. Game time is 7 p.m.

Independence is 1-0; Hough is 0-1.
