CORNELIUS – Quarterback TJ Mixson broke free for touchdown runs of 42 and 43 yards and running back Jalen Simmons had two more rushing touchdowns to help West Charlotte to a convincing 34-7 victory over Hough Friday night.
The win lifted the visiting Lions to 6-2 on the year. With the loss, Hough’s Huskies fell to 2-5.
Hough actually opened the night’s scoring, with 8:28 left in the first quarter, when quarterback Josh Stilley hit running back Jackson Campbell with a 32-yard touchdown pass. Campbell hauled in the ball in the middle of the field, avoided a tackle and scampered into the endzone for the score. Nathan Deering kicked the extra point to go up 7-0.
It was all West Charlotte the rest of the way, as the Lions racked up rushing yardage from Simmons, who had 154 yards on the ground, and Mixson.
The Lions’ first score came a little over a minute after the Huskies’ TD, after Simmons broke free for a 40-yard run to score the his team’s first TD with 7:06 left in the first quarter. The Lions missed the 2-point conversion, and the score stood at 7-6 Huskies.
In the midst of Hough’s drive, West Charlotte defensive back Ardy Holmes intercepted a Tilley pass. On the next play, Mixson found a right-side hole and took the ball 42 yards into the endzone. Another 2-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Lions with a 12-7 lead.
About four minutes later, Simmons scored again, on a 16-yard TD run. He also ran in the point after attempt, and the Lions led 20-7.
Hough punted to end its next possession, and Mixson and Simmons traded runs to push into Huskies territory. Mixon faked a handoff then kept the ball himself, eluding tacklers to take the ball 43 yards for his second touchdown of the night. On the 2 point attempt, Mixson pitched the ball to Brandon McCauley, who took it in for the score. That left it 28-7 West Charlotte.
That’s where the score stayed until the fourth quarter, when Mixson threw a 37-yard pass to Qavis Moore. The 2 point conversion was no go, leaving the score 34-7 with 5:21 left in the game. That’s how it ended.
