Davidson Day (14-3) has wasted no time putting its brand new gym to good use. Friday, the private prep school will host basketball powerhouse United Faith in games that will feature several highly scouted players.
The girls varsity will play at 6 p.m., followed by the boys varsity at 7:30 p.m., in what is expected to be a sell-out game.
United Faith Christian Academy, of south Charlotte, has two players who have signed letters of intent for Division I college programs, 6’1″ senior point guard Ian Miller (Florida State), and 6’8″ senior power forward Kadeem Green (Missouri). Green is not expected to play Friday due to a tendon injury. Also getting attention from scouts is the Falcons’ seven-foot sophomore Peter Jurkin, ranked #18 nationally. United Faith is the NCISAA 1A-division defending state champion.
For the Patriots, sophomore Rashun Davis has drawn interest from High Point, Columbia, Central Michigan and William & Mary, among others. The point guard is Davidson Day’s leading scorer, averaging 11.5 points per game, 4.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists.
TUESDAY AT GASTON DAY
The Patriots are coming off games Tuesday against Gaston Day. The boys defeated Gaston 48-41, led by junior Jimmy Bonds‘ game-high 21 points. The Davidson Day girls team lost 38-20.
“Our girls team is very young,” said Davidson Day Director of Athletics Kevin Buechler. “They’re improving dramatically.”
Friday, the girls will be facing the top ranked team in the state in United Faith.
For the boys, Tuesday’s win over Gaston Day means the Patriots may be playing United Faith for the early lead in the state privates’ Southern Piedmont league, depending on the results of Thursday’s game between United Faith and Victory Christian.
Mr. Buechler attributes Davidson Day’s success to the leadership by coach Ron Johnson, who is in his first season with the team. Plus there’s the new facility.
“This is our first full season with a gym,” Mr. Buechler said.
