Saint Louis beat Davidson 10-7 Friday night in the first game of a weekend baseball series at Wilson Field. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 12-8 overall and 2-2 in the A-10, while the Billikens improved to 16-9 on the season and 3-1 in the conference.
Saint Louis outhit Davidson, 12-9, but committed three errors to the Wildcats’ one. Shortstop Alec Acosta led the squad with two hits, one run and three RBI, while third baseman Ben Arkin and first baseman David Daniels each scored two runs.
Catcher Colton Frabasilio went 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBI to lead both squads.
The Wildcats started the day hot, picking up three runs in the first at bat. Two singles to left field put Arkin and Daniels on base, before right fielder Lee Miller sent a long ball to right center for a two RBI double. Acosta’s single up the middle eventually scored Miller to give Davidson the early 3-0 lead.
Seven-straight runs from the Billikens, one in the second, two in the third and four in the fifth, allowed Saint Louis to take control, 7-3, after the top of the fifth. But the Wildcats matched its performance with four runs off two hits with two Billiken errors to tie the game at seven heading into the sixth.
Davidson notched just one hit in the final three innings as SLU picked a run in the eighth and two in the ninth to secure the contest.
Right handed pitcher Clark Beeker started the day for the Wildcats, allowing nine hits, seven runs and striking out four in six innings. Freshman right hander Josh Smutzer stepped on the mound the seventh and allowed only one run off one hit and struck out two to get his first loss of the season. Sophomore right hander Westin Whitmire pitched the final inning, allowing two hits, two runs and facing seven batters.
Clay Smith threw the first five innings for the Billikens, allowing seven hits, seven runs and striking out four, before left hander Brett Shimanovsky pitched the final four innings with only allowing two Wildcat hits for the victory.
