CORNELIUS – Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce members have hit their goal of raising $71,500 to pay for construction of a Habitat for Humanity House for a family in Cornelius. The group hit the target thanks to a recent fund-raising party and last-minute pledges from local businesses, according to Denis Bilodeau, chair of the chamber board’s community affairs division.

The chamber had been raising money and planning the Business Build project since last fall, according to Mr. Bilodeau, who also is president of Aquesta Insurance Services Inc. Wells Fargo kicked off the effort by committing $50,000, of which $20,000 was set up as a matching challenge: The Chamber had to raise another $20,000 to get the rest.

A May 4 fundraising party organized by Mr. Bilodeau brought the campaign within $3,714. Then last Thursday, May 17, Kevin Mahl and business partner Jamie Rolewicz (of Champion Tire and Wheel and Hyde Park Storage Suites) stepped in to fill the gap. Mr. Mahl actually helped launch the Business Build project last year as the chamber’s 2011 community affairs chairman.

On Tuesday, Mr. Bilodeau said the campaign was a community effort. “Clearly, Wells Fargo stepped up in a big way that helped us make it happen,” he said. But, he added, “It doesn’t just happen, it’s the effect of a number of volunteers who see the need and get the word out in the community.”

The much-anticipated Antiquity Heights Apartments, in the Antiquity neighborhood off N.C. 115 in Cornelius, should be ready for tenants by mid-June, according to Solstice Parters Manager Cathy Connors.

The apartments have been built as “workforce housing,” intended to provide an affordable option to middle-income individuals and families, with monthly rent ranging from $550 to $800 a month, depending on the size of the apartment. The units include:

10, 1-bedroom units, ranging in rent from $550 to $650 per month

64, 2-bedroom units, ranging in rent from $625 to $700 per month

20, 3-bedroom units, ranging in rent from $700 to $800 per month

“We were actually able to lower some of our prices from what we originally thought,” Ms. Connors said.

The units are not pet-friendly, unless requested and verified for reasonable accommodation for disabled. Planned indoor amenities include a community room, computer lab and exercise equipment area, and outdoor amenities include a picnic area with grills and a play area in the large lawn in front of the buildings.

Last week the apartment management company, GEM Management, received 24 applications, company representative Danny Ellis said. “There’s a tremendous amount of interest.”

“They’re beating down the doors, so that’s a good thing,” Ms. Connors said.

Over the next four weeks, crews will put finishing touches on the buildings, and will finish the landscaping and irrigation, she said. The certificates of occupancy are expected June 15.

Painted lampshades, crystal spheres and a turquoise-themed chandelier were among the lighting designs at High Point Market.

Lighting is so essential in our homes and businesses. Yet for so long the choices in lighting styles, materials and forms were rather limited. Today we have more choices as seen at this spring’s High Point Market.

Jamie Young added a decorative touch to his painted lamp shades as pictured above. The delicately painted Oriental scenes of flora and fauna with birds very much resembled the expensive hand painted murals seen primarily on walls. Placed on silver lamp bases, both short and tall, these painted lamp shades are an effective way to add pattern and interest in a room, especially those that are decorated in neutral colors.

Elegance also showed a series of bird and blossom theme chandeliers and wall scones. Look to them for lighting to compliment any French inspired interiors or vintage interior. The mix of pale colored small glass beads with antiqued gold bases give them an inviting vintage look. It was refreshing to see older lighting styles being given a new update.

Colors, both bright and subtle are now being seen in not only the lamp bases, but in the decorative elements of various types of lighting. It was Regina Andrew that updated the traditional chandelier by using a wealth of draped turquoise beads, instead of glass or crystal as pictured here. Turquoise is a shade of blue that you can think of as a feel good color that can brighten up a room, especially because it reminds us of the sky or sea. Finished with an aged metal base and electric candlelights, this chandelier adds a more relaxed, casual look into any room. It also was a good example of taking what has been typically used elsewhere, in this case jewelry of turquoise, and expanding its use to lighting.

Regina Andrew also showed some elegant ceiling fixtures. Especially noteworthy were these striking black and clear crystal spheres pictured here. With its abundance of contrasting crystals, it hints of Hollywood glamour that has entered the home. In fact an abundance of crystals appeared throughout the show in not only lighting but in various forms of furniture and even on wallpaper.

But there were also a number of lighting options that while different did not seem like good ideas. One such example was a glass chandelier by Nueve made of crystals. With its mass of strands of dangling crystals all I could think of was jellyfish that I see washed up on beaches. Having had my share of jellyfish stings as a child, it did not bring back fond memories.
