Dogs are increasingly important on the battlefield. Foreign Policy reported that the United States now has more than 2,800 active-duty canines, including one that was part of the recent Navy SEAL raid in Pakistan that killed terrorist leader Osama bin-Laden.
In Afghanistan, Marines are using dogs for everything from sniffing out roadside bombs to pursuit of the enemy to search and rescue. They’re not just add-ons, Marines say, they’re part of the team. As one Marine told a New York Times reporter: “We consider the dog another Marine.”
