Show off your pup in the Commodore Cover Dog Contest


581403_500519096689475_1382418288_nDon’t miss the 2013 Currents Commodore Cover Dog Contest benefiting Friends of the Animals on Saturday, August 31 from 5-8 p.m. at Birkdale Golf Club in Huntersville.

Currents Magazine is looking for that all-American, fun-loving, ball-chasing, tail-wagging, tongue-lickin’, camera-craving canine to adorn the cover of its October 2013 issue. Register your furry friend at www.pageantpup.org.or in person the day of the event.

Head to Birkdale Golf Club to enter your pup or just to partake in the evening’s activities. Pre-contest activities include a vendor fair and a silent auction. Following the contest, which begins at 6 p.m., country music start Meghan Linsey of Steel Magnolias will perform in concert.

The Currents Commodore Cover Dog Contest benefits Friends of the Animals. Friends of the Animals facilitates animal welfare through health programs, housing, food and spay/neuter education.

Cannibal tadpoles help researchers understand digestion

A carnivorous, cannibalistic tadpole may play a role in understanding the evolution and development of digestive organs, according to research from North Carolina State University. These findings may also shed light on universal rules of organ development that could lead to better diagnosis and prevention of intestinal birth defects.

NC State developmental biologist Nanette Nascone-Yoder, graduate student Stephanie Bloom and postdoc Cris Ledon-Rettig looked at Xenopus laevis (the African clawed frog) and Lepidobatrachus laevis (Budgett’s frog) tadpoles. These frog species differ in diet and last shared a common ancestor about 110 million years ago. Like most tadpoles, Xenopus exist primarily on a diet of algae, and their long, simple digestive tracts are not able to process insects or proteins until they become adult frogs. Budgett’s is an aggressive species of frog which is carnivorous – and cannibalistic – in the tadpole stage. Read the full story

House passes bill to regulate animal breeders


The state House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a bill aimed at ensuring that commercial animal breeders treat animals humanely, regulating what animal activists call “puppy mills.”

The vote was 100 to 15 on House Bill 930, which applies to anyone with custody of 10 or more adult female dogs. The bill now goes to the state Senate. Read the full story

Eaglet hatches at Carolina Raptor Center


The first2333_49438408317_5051_n of two eggs laid by Savannah the Bald Eagle at Carolina Raptor center back in January has hatched.

Savannah and her partner Derek started with three eggs this time around. The first egg was laid on New Year’s Day and the second came four days later. A third egg was deemed not viable and, as is normal behavior for eagles, Derek removed the egg from the nest and ate it.

Eagle eggs have an incubation period of 33 to 35 days. Read the full story
