CHARLOTTE - Citizens crowded the meeting chamber at Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center Tuesday for a public hearing on proposals to ban smoking on government property and outlaw tobacco in public parks. While the majority of speakers supported the ordinance, some considered it unduly restrictive.

The lifelong learning program DavidsonLearns is continuing to grow, with plans to offer the largest selection of courses in its history this fall. Registration is open for courses that begin Sept. 15, including writing, poetry, the Arab Spring, the Russian writer Dostoevsky, and environmental studies. Meanwhile, the program also plans a joint film screening with Davidson Film Club Sept. 13 of "If a Tree Falls", including a discussion with filmmaker Marshall Curry.

After years of shutting down on Thursdays, community libraries in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library system – including the Cornelius and Davidson public libraries – will be open on Thursdays from 10am-8pm, starting this week.
