Fun Summer Activities for Kids in Davidson
During the summer, many kids get bored. This article aims to help you discover fun things to do during your last weeks of summer vacation.
The Swimming Hole:
If you have a membership, we recommend The Swimming Hole. It is a great place, whether you are swimming or simply relaxing. Even the snack bar offers great deals, including 25 cent Popsicles and 50 cent sodas. Along with the pool, it offers a diving board and some very comfortable recliners under the shade.
Concerts on the Green:
The concert on the green is a great place to be with friends and family. Every Sunday evening many people gather on the Green to relax, listen to music, and eat. There are different bands each week, with a variety of music to enjoy. Many people go, so you will almost always find someone you know.
Camps:
There are many camps available around Davidson and surrounding areas. We recommend Soccer camp at Davidson College, Lake Camp at the Davidson College Lake Campus, or simply any Parks & Rec Camp. For example, at Soccer camp your child will experience different moves and positions on the Davidson College Soccer field, scrimmage against other players and teams, and have lots of fun with other activities.
It may be too late for most of these, but call around to see if they have any last minute cancellations or openings.
Lake Campus Camp is also very fun. Your child will experience a variety of different activities including Water skiing, Knee boarding, Wakeboarding, Archery, Sailing, Free Swim, Games, and much much more. It is a great opportunity to meet new people and to learn team-building values. Most activities throughout the week are divided into teams amongst the campers. At the end of the week there is a battle between teams to see who will be the champion of that week. In addition, each team creates a movie and competes for the best (nicest) team award. It is very exciting.
Parks & Rec camps offer a lot of good options. There are so many activities that it is difficult to choose between them! Options include sports, art, and outdoor activities. We recommend bowling camp, where you bowl all morning. On the last day, you experience cosmic bowling with black lights, disco balls, and music. You don’t want to miss it!
Have Fun:
The first two words say it all! Find some friends, play games, and go outside whenever it’s not too hot! Have a squirt gun war or play Capture the Flag. Matthew Borst said that he had the most fun “with Michael and Adam and Sam and Sophie, playing in the woods.” So get a bunch of kids together and explore the nature trails behind Davidson Elementary and Davidson I. B. Middle School. If it gets too hot, go inside and make a movie or take on a Lego challenge, like building the longest bridge or tallest structure you can. The library is always open on weekends, and you can go there to cool off and do some summer reading. We recommend Tangerine by Edward Bloor, the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, and Eragon by Christopher Paolini. The Cornelius Arts Center currently features the artwork of local kids in its exhibit “Summer Creates”. Children as young as 4 years old participated in several summer programs, and their work is open to the public. Go check it out!
