2 moms hope to inspire others to forgo cars when possible

You’ve seen them. As you drive down Concord Road or Main Street here in Davidson, you notice them out of your car window. Then again, the next day. And the next.

Two women, walking. One pushes a stroller. Just ahead of them, five boys ride their bikes.

In a walking community like Davidson, it’s not surprising to see runners, bikers and students hurrying to class. But Mary Alice Mitchell and Meredith Johnston are more than occasional pedestrians.

Both have made a conscious effort to forgo their cars whenever possible and adopt walking as a way of life.

Cornelius PARC Department will offer the Couch-to-5K Running Plan for participants ages 18 and up. This six-week program will be Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30 pm starting Sept. 20 and concluding Oct. 27. All classes are held at Bailey Middle School Track, 11900 Bailey Road in Cornelius.

Team Triumph will host the 2nd annual “Rumble in the Woods” race series Saturday, Nov. 13, at Lake Norman State Park in Troutman. This year’s event features a 5k and a 10k runs on the park’s trails. Both races start at 9 a.m.
