Mecklenburg County Health Department is again distributing potassium iodide pills to residents within a 10-mile radius of Duke Energy’s McGuire Nuclear Station on Lake Norman. Potassium iodide, also known as KI, is an over-the-counter medication that can protect the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine in the event of a nuclear emergency at McGuire.

Eligible Mecklenburg County residents can acquire KI tablets in several ways. First, the County Health Department is distributing KI tablets to eligible citizens on Saturday, Sept. 27 at North Mecklenburg High School and Southwest Middle School, at 13624 Steele Creek Rd., Charlotte. The distribution will occur from 9am-1pm.

After Sept. 27th, residents can pick up KI tablets at the Cornelius, Huntersville, or Pineville Police Department, as well as the Mecklenburg County Health Department branch located at 2845 Beatties Ford Road. Businesses must wait until after September 27 to pick up KI but may do so at the Beatties Ford location. Businesses are ask to call ahead to arrange to pick up their tablets. These sites will provide KI tablets during normal working hours.
