Health officials are urging North Carolinians to make sure they’re immunized against pertussis (whooping cough) after new outbreaks across the state. Between December and the first week of June, state public health officials had tracked 179 cases of whooping cough in 23 counties, including 122 cases in the Winston-Salem area. That compared to just 126 cases of pertussis statewide in 2011. Read the full story

The latest water-quality report is out from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities, and it gives our area’s drinking water good grades, based on more than 150,000 tests in 2011. Those of us who live in north Mecklenburg and Charlotte, get our water from Mountain Island Lake and Lake Norman.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities said it is now delivering the 2011 Water Quality Report to all county residents – a move required by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. And its available now for download on the CMU website.

The report notes that CMU’s drinking water “meets and exceeds all state and federal standards.” Read the full story

Town of Davidson
On Thursday, June 28th and Friday, June 29th, the Town of Davidson hosted planning and public health experts from Wilmington and New Hanover County, North Carolina. Seven representatives from the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO), University of North Carolina Wilmington, and the New Hanover County Health Department attended a one-on-one health impact assessment (HIA) training given by Katherine Hebert, Davidson Design for Life (DD4L) Project Coordinator. The Town of Davidson is in the midst of a study looking at how street design affects public health. The coordinator of the Davidson Design for Life program will be at Davidson Farmer’s Market on July 7 and 21 to talk with residents about the health study, and to hand out information on street safety and healthy street design.

Katherine Hebert, the town’s DD4L Project Coordinator, wants ot talk with residents and answer questions about the “health impact assessment” being conducted on Davidson’s street design standards. Read the full story
