In September, Sam Spencer IV of Davidson found himself up against an unusual deadline – to make a blood donation. It turns out you can give blood every 56 days under federal health rules, and Mr. Spencer, 27, had set a goal of donating the maximum seven times during the year.

He had missed chances to give earlier in the month because he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. Read the full story

The flu season is hitting earlier and harder this fall in North Carolina – and it can be deadly. A dozen North Carolina adults have died from complications of the flu virus since mid-November, including four last week. And state health officials say reports of flu-like illnesses have continued to increase above what’s usually seen at this time of year.

Team Summit rode 200 miles to the beach for the MS Society.

Team Summit, from Davidson’s Summit Coffee, had a great weekend ride on Sept. 22-23, covering 200-miles from Monroe to Sunset Beach, N.C. We raised more than $5,500 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The eight-person team ranged in age from 19 to 62, with experience from novice to veteran. Members were Will Roberts and Derek May, Davidson students Haley Sanner and Alex Taylor, Summit barista Jonathan Head, and Tom, Tim and Brian Helfrich. Read the full story
