The Town of Davidson Parks and Recreation department has announced a variety of fitness and health programs for October 2011, ranging from Zumba and Pilates to martial arts and a healthy eating class. Read on for the list. Pre-registration is required by going to www.d-Recs.org or calling the Parks & Rec office at 704-892-3349.
Unless noted, all programs are at the Parks and Recreation office, 416 Armour St., Davidson.

Many articles in health magazines feature celebrities and models who participate in yoga, jogging, or kickboxing. They make it appear as if people are doing nothing but exercising all day long.
Many newspaper articles have appeared, reporting on research about chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cancer along with one of the major underlying chronic conditions, physical inactivity. But the reality of today’s society and our health is often very different. Read the full story

Lake Norman Regional Medical Center
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Since 1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined.
This is great progress, however there are still women who do not take advantage of early detection and others who do not get regular screening mammograms and clinical breast exams. According to the American Cancer Society, there is expected to be an estimated 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women this year, along with 2,140 new cases in men. Read the full story

The Lake Norman Multiple Sclerosis Support Group is now meeting on the third Friday of every month at Davidson United Methodist Church. The next meeting is Friday, Sept. 16, at 10 a.m. at the church, 233 S. Main St., Davidson. This month, Dr. Thor Borresen of Mecklenburg Neurology will speak on gillenya, and then lead a discussion. He is a neurologist and works with patients with Multiple Sclerosis. Free.

The Davidson Housing Coalition’s annual Festival for Hope & Housing, including 50k and 100k bicycle rides, is scheduled Saturday, Sept. 10, in downtown Davidson.
The festival and bike rides are a fundraiser for the Davidson Housing Coalition, which preserves and creates affordable housing and provides homeowner education and job search and training services. Read the full story

Homesley & Wingo Law will host the 11th annual Blues & Burritos festival in downtown Mooresville Sept. 16 to aid HealthReach and Serenity House.
MOORESVILLE- Health Reach Community Clinic, a free clinic on East Statesville Avenue in Mooresville, has decided to close its free dental clinic. Meanwhile, the organization says it is in the process of seeking accreditation through the North Carolina Association of Free Clinics.
HeathReach Community Clinic provides free health care to low-income residents of Mooresville, Mount Mourne and Troutman. The clinic also offers free pharmacy prescriptions, education and chiropractic care. In 2010, the clinic recorded 5,000 patient visits and provided care to about 1,800 local residents, according to its 2010 annual report. Read the full story

The 7th annual Run for Green half marathon, 10K and 5K/run walk are scheduled Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 a.m. over roads and trails through Davidson. More than 800 runners are expected for the annual race, which supports the Davidson Lands Conservancy. The race comes as part of the conservancy’s Green Day Festival on the Davidson Village Green. Two local restaurants next week will help two cycling teams raise money for their rides in Charlotte’s ’24 Hours of Booty,’ which benefits cancer research. On Monday, Char-Grill will host “12 Hours of Burgers” on behalf of a team from Davidson’s Moliver Chiropractic. Then on Wednesday, Campania Cafe´donates 10 percent of its sales to Ingersoll-Rand’s team in the ride. The Charlotte 24 Hours of Booty ride begins next Friday, July 29, at 7 p.m., based at Queens University. Read the full story
