Sigma Phi Epsilon at Davidson College will host its annual Davidson Turkey Trot, a 5K run for charity, on Saturday morning, Nov. 19, in downtown Davidson.

The race begins at 10 a.m. at the Village Green, Main Street and Concord Road. This year’s race will support the Free Clinics of Our Towns at the Ada Jenkins Center. Read the full story

Community Blood Center of the Carolinas has announced a schedule of public blood drives in the Lake Norman area, beginning with a drive this Sunday at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson. They’ve also started their annual “Puppies for Patients” program, which lets blood donors send stuffed animals to hospitalized children. Read the full story

New reproductive technologies now enable parents to select some genetic traits for their children, and soon it will be possible to begin to shape ourselves as a species. Despite cries of alarm over such a prospect, Dr. Ronald M. Green argues that we will—and we should—undertake the direction of our own evolution.

On Sunday night, Nov. 13, Dr. Green will talk about the issue in a lecture at Davidson College titled “Babies by Design: Ethics of Genetic Choice.” His talk is at 7 p.m. in the 900 Room of the Alvarez Student Union at Davidson.
