The Town of Davidson has received a three-year, $350,000 grant from the federal Centers for Disease Control to begin regular studies of how planning and policies affect public health, and to develop what town officials are calling “healthy community” initiatives.”

The town is one of a half-dozen places across the country – and by far the smallest community – to share a total of $8.4 million, or $2.8 million a year for three years, in the Health Impact Assessment to Foster Community Design grant program. Other grants went to the San Francisco Department of Public Health; the Massachusetts Department of Public Health; the Oregon Department of Human Services; the Douglas County Health Department in Omaha, Neb.; and the Baltimore City Health Department. Davidson's Triple Play Farm and The Tree yoga studio are offering yoga on horseback.

A Davidson horse farm and a local yoga studio are teaming up to offer an unusual class this fall that will get yoga practitioners up off the mat onto horseback.

“Roll up your yoga mat. You’re not going to need it for this class,” read a press release from Triple Play Farm, on Kistler Farm Road off East Rocky River Road in east Davidson. Read the full story

The 7th annual Run for Green half marathon, 10K and 5K/run walk are scheduled Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 a.m. over roads and trails through Davidson. More than 800 runners are expected for the annual race, which supports the Davidson Lands Conservancy.  The race comes as part of the conservancy’s Green Day Festival on the Davidson Village Green. The A2S (Access to Success) Foundation of former Davidson College basketball player Andrew Lovedale will host its first “Kicks from ‘Cats: The Andrew Lovedale 5K” on Sept. 10, 2011, at 9 a.m. on the college cross country trail. The event is a fund-raiser for the foundation, which helps underprivileged youth in Nigeria through training in education, faith and sports. Read the full story
