Acetaminophen is widely used, but it is it as safe as we think? (DavidsonNews.net photo illustration)
Headache? Pain? Most of us will pop a few Tylenol without even blinking. But a recent report from The Toronto Star says that acetaminophen, the drug that’s in Tylenol and is one of the most common over-the-counter painkillers, has a dark side that’s not well known. Unintentional overdoses of acetaminophen have killed hundreds of Canadians in the last decade. Because of its “narrow therapeutic window” – the prescribed dose is very close to a dangerous dose – medical experts say that the drug, which first came into use in the 1890s and was widespread by the 1950s, would not be approved as an over-the-counter drug under today’s regulatory system. While the drug is one of the safest painkillers available, particularly considering that billions of the pills are consumed each year, it’s important to remember that accidental overdose could be deadly, particularly for at-risk populations, such as chronic drinkers, the malnourished, people with liver disease and infants and seniors.
