On Saturday, Nov. 3, students and families at Pine Lake Preparatory School in Mount Mourne will dedicate a day to raising awareness about stomach cancer, by the joining first-ever international walk for No Stomach for Cancer.
Pine Lake’s walkers will join others around the nation and the world, from New Zealand, Australia, Italy, Spain, the UK, Colombia, Turkey, and Canada, to raise awareness and provide support for stomach cancer victims and their families.
Rock bands (including Pine Lake students) will perform and they’ll have face painting, and games. There will be Little Caesar’s Pizza, a bake sale, kettle corn, Italian ice, and pretzels for sale, with proceeds going to No Stomach for Cancer.
Stomach cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the world with one million new cases diagnosed in the world each year and more than 800,000 deaths annually. No Stomach For Cancer fought for and won a U.S. Senate resolution proclaiming November National Stomach Cancer Awareness Month. The relatively unknown disease receives the least amount of federal funding per cancer death in the United States.
“People throughout the United States and the world have been asking for an event in their area – for a way to join with others to raise awareness and support the fight against stomach cancer,” Karen Chelcun Schreiber, Board Chair at No Stomach For Cancer, said in a statement. “Our goal is to unite the caring power of people worldwide and bring stomach cancer awareness into the public eye. The walk is a critical step in the effort to save lives and advance stomach cancer research.”
Pine Lake invites the community to join the walk on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 9 a.m. on the Pine Lake campus, 1639 Mecklenburg Highway (N.C. 115), Mooresville.
Donations also may be made through the fundraising page at http://www.crowdrise.com/pinelakepreparatory. All proceeds raised will help No Stomach For Cancer to support stomach cancer research.
