Sept. 17 Run for Green to support lands conservancy

[1]The 7th annual Run for Green half marathon, 10K and 5K/run walk are scheduled Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 a.m. over roads and trails through Davidson. More than 800 runners are expected for the annual race, which supports the Davidson Lands Conservancy [1]. The race comes as part of the conservancy’s Green Day Festival on the Davidson Village Green.
Participants are encouraged to register early for reduced fees and to reserve a spot in these popular races.
“The course is considered challenging but showcases Davidson’s special blend of the new with the old, the natural with the developed, the quiet and calm with the hustle and bustle,” event chair Bill Latham said in a press release.
The races begin and end at the Village Green, Concord Road and Main Street in front of the Davidson library branch. The course follows the scenic streets and paved greenways of historic Davidson, and the half-marathon route will feature 1.5 miles along the newly completed West Branch Greenway.
Also new this year, prize money will be awarded to runners in both male and female categories in the 10K and half-marathon of up to $75 each for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for first-place masters. The age divisions for the 5k have been restructured to include smaller groups of 10 and under, 11 to 14, 65 to 69, and 70 plus.
Following the awards, Flatiron Kitchen and Taphouse will offer free beer for race finishers, and DLC will sponsor the “GreenDay” festival in conjunction with the races from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with entertainment and family-friendly activities.
“We invite everyone to cheer the runners along the way and to come to the Green for the host of activities and exhibits featured there,” Mr. Latham said.
