North Mecklenburg Senior Center will offer an eight-week Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program beginning Monday, Jan. 31. The free class will be Mondays and Wednesdays, 1-2 p.m., at the center, 18731 W. Catawba Ave., Cornelius.
The program is taught by certified instructors who have completed in-depth training on arthritis and the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program.
“This is a unique program developed by physical therapists specifically for people with arthritis” center director Joanne Ahern said. “It has been documented to help decrease arthritis pain and relieve stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion.”
During the 8 weeks (Jan. 31–March 28) participants will learn about arthritis and go through a series of gentle movements and activities designed to increase mobility and range of motion. Endurance building routines, relaxation exercises, and health education topics will also be included. Classes are suitable for every fitness level and can be taken either sitting down or standing.
“You don’t have to be challenged by arthritis to participate. Those with other chronic conditions and those who want to get moving after being sedentary for a while will benefit from this program as well,” Ms. Ahern added.
Registration is now open and pre-registration is required. Call 704-892-4041 or email northmeckdirector@cmseniorcenters.org to register and for more information.
