Project Life marks 20 years of bone marrow typing

Twenty years ago, students at Davidson College created a campus group called Project Life to increase the number of potential donors on the National Bone Marrow Registry. On Saturday night, some of those original organizers as well as marrow donors and recipients, will gather at the college to celebrate two decades in operation. There’s also another bone-marrow typing drive on Sunday at Davidson College Presbyterian Church.
Project Life was created by a group of students who wanted to honor a friend who had a bone marrow transplant. Today the program raises thousands of dollars annually to pay for typing of new students as well as community members. The National Bone Marrow Registry helps patients who need a marrow transplant find a donor and receive the treatment they need.
On Saturday at 6:30 p.m., Project Life will host a 20th anniversary party in the Davidson College Chambers Building Lilly Family Gallery. Supporters and past participants will gather. Catherine Turner Greene, a 1993 Davidson grad who has been involved over the years, said more than 40 bone marrow matches have resulted from people typed at Davidson College. Many of the recipients and donors will attend Saturday’s event, she said.
Ms. Greene said the National Marrow Donor Program believes the party may be the largest group of donors and recipients ever gathered. Also attending will people from other groups that have helped with drives, including the Red Cross, and the National Marrow Donor Program (Be the Match).
On Sunday at Davidson College Presbyterian Church, they’ll also be typing people for the registry. Anyone interested may stop by the church after the 9:45 and 11 a.m. services. Donors must between the ages of 18 and 60, be willing to donate to any patient in need, meet the health guidelines. Testing for the registry is done by a simple cheek swab.
