Senior Center offers ‘Managing Concerns About Falls’

CORNELIUS – Falls are the leading cause of injury and death among people over 65 years old, and studies have shown that those who survive are two or three times more likely to fall again. North Mecklenburg Senior Center is offering a program beginning Nov. 15 that it says will save lives, titled “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls.”
Center Director Joanne Ahern says that the award winning, evidence based program, developed at Boston University, is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have concerns about falls.
The 16-hour class, which meets twice weekly for four weeks, will teach participants to control risks and fear of falling. The classes will help participants view falls and fear of falling as controllable; set realistic goals for increasing activity; change their environment to reduce risk factors; and promote exercise to increase strength and balance.
The seminar is especially designed to benefit community-dwelling older adults who:
- Are concerned about falls
- Have fallen in the past
- Restrict their activities because of concerns about falling
- Are interested in improving flexibility, balance and strength
- Are age 60 or older, ambulatory and able to problem-solve.
The classes will be held Mondays and Thursdays Nov. 15 to Dec. 13, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., (with no class on Thursday Nov. 25, Thanksgiving) at the North Mecklenburg Senior Center, located at 18731 West Catawba Avenue in Cornelius. The program is free and open to all in the community aged 60 and over. Snacks and beverages will be provided. However advance registration is mandatory.

The North Mecklenburg Senior Center is one of four centers operated by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Senior Centers whose mission is to serve as a focal point to deliver a broad spectrum of services and activities for older adults throughout the Charlotte Mecklenburg community. It is a nonprofit organization which operates for the benefit all senior adults in the community, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin or disability.
