This Week in the Lake Norman region, town government meetings, an art opening, healthy lifestyle meetings, and numerous other events are on the calendar.

Among the highlights: Author Wiley Cash, whose book “A Land More Kind Than Home” is this year’s ReadDavdson book, will visit for a dinner and talk.  Today (Monday) The Angels of ’97 will host the 10th Annual Puttin’ Fore a Purpose Golf Tournament at Pine Island, starting at 12:30pm. The Cornelius Town Board meets tonight at Cornelius Town Hall at 6pm, with a public hearing planned on proposed changes to the town’s Land Use Plan. COMING UP THIS WEEK

Monday evening, the Lake Norman Regional Medical Center will host the American Cancer Society’s “Look Good … Feel Better” program from 6:15pm – 8:15pm in the hospital private dining room. Volunteer cosmetologists will assist female cancer patients in learning how to use make-up and skincare techniques to overcome appearance related effects of chemotherapy and radiation.

Lake Norman Big Band plays at a Davidson Concert on the Green

On Tuesday, big band returns to the region once again with The Lake Norman Big Band’s monthly concert at George Pappas’ Victory Lanes in Mooresville from 7-9pm. The event is free, though donations are requested. Tuesday evening, the Davidson Board of Commissioners will meet for a work session at 6pm in Davidson Town Hall. At 7:30pm, the Twister’s Shag Club continues their last dance class series of the year at Fat Boys Restaurant in Mooresville. Learn how to dance in either Beginner 1 or 2 lessons.

Wednesday, the Cornelius Land Development Code Advisory Board will meet at noon in Room 204 of Cornelius Town Hall, and Hough Men’s Soccer takes on Vance at home starting at 6pm. At 6:30pm, the mayors of Cornelius, Davidson, and Huntersville will host a public forum at Cornelius Town Hall in the Community Room along with representatives of CMS for a presentation on the proposed school bonds. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

Artists participating in the group exhibition “Parodic Machines” at the Davidson College Visual Arts Center will participate in an artists’ panel discussion at 6pm in the center. The artists will speak about their work, which relies on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The exhibit opens this Thursday at 6:30pm.

Wiley Cash’s “A Land More Kind Than Home” is this year’s ReadDavidson selection.

Thursday, the group exhibition titled “Parodic Machines” opens at Davidson College on Thursday with a reception in the Davidson College Belk Visual Arts Center at 6:30pm. The exhibition feature five artists working in the fields of robotics. Green Drinks Lake Norman welcomes Cornelius Town Commissioner Bruce Trimbur at 5:30pm at Campania Café.

Meanwhile, Author Wiley Cash, author of this year’s townwide read “A Land More Kind Than Home,” will participate in the final ReadDavidson program of the year at 7pm at The Pines.

“A Land More Kind Than Home” has been New York Times Bestseller and is the 2013 Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance pick for fiction this fall.

Cash’s book revolves around an incident involving an autistic boy at a healing service at a little church in the North Carolina Mountains. The charismatic believers won’t talk to the local sheriff about what they’ve seen. And at the center of the mystery is Carson Chambliss, a snake handling ex-convict turned preacher whose past is just as mysterious as the power he claims to possess.

CASH TO VISIT OCT. 24

The series will culminate Thursday, Oct. 24, in a visit by the author. “An Evening With Wiley Cash” is 7-9pm at The Pines at Davidson, 400 Avinger Lane.

This year, the Book Clubs of Davidson group is raising funds through sponsorships to help pay for Wiley Cash’s visit. There is a fund-raising lunch on Thursday, Oct. 24, hosted by ReadDavidson, where participating sponsors will be able to eat and talk with Wiley Cash. The Book Clubs of Davidson also are hosting a fund-raising dinner that evening, where Wiley Cash will be the guest of honor, and sponsors will be able to dine with him. Sponsors of $250 and above are invited to attend the luncheon or dinner; one or two people per sponsorship may attend the meal event of their choice.
