Davidson Community Players’ cast of 43 from 11 area schools will open the legendary musical “West Side Story” Thursday night, June 18, at 8 pm at Duke Family Performance Hall at Davidson College. Melissa Ohlman-Roberge directs the production, which continues for seven performances through June 27.

Steven Readling (Tony) and Grace Kidd (Maria) in "West Side Story."

The popular show, currently in revival on Broadway, is set in New York City during the 1950s. It’s a modern twist on Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet,” as two feuding gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, square off on the streets.

The Jerome Robbins classic is filled with musical favorites by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, such as “I Feel Pretty,” “Somewhere,” “Tonight,” and “Gee, Officer Krupke.”

Maria is played by Grace Kidd (Charlotte), Tony is played by Steven James (Mooresville), Anita is played by Abigail Pagán (Statesville), Riff is played by Steven Buchanan (Indian Trail), and Bernardo is played by Salvador Garcia (Charlotte).

The role of Officer Krupke will be played by Davidson College’s campus police chief, Fountain Walker.

Tickets are $15-$22. For reservations, call 704-892-7918 or buy online at www.carolinatix.org.
