I want depth, I want impact – watercolors were, well… watery. Most casual watercolor artist do landscapes and florals. So when I saw these two pictures at the American Watercolor Society’s 2010 Traveling Exhibit, I was moved. The artists, John Salminen and Dean Mitchell took me to places that I’ve visited before. By using watercolor they seemed to capture the oppressive humidity of New Orleans and the misty fog of San Francisco. These two pictures are the gold medal winners of the show and it’s obvious why. They use technique to amplify a scenes significance and bring character to their work.
