Sponsored by Cornelius-based retail store IcyWakes Surf Shop Saturday’s annual Wake the Lake Competition promises to deliver premiere talent in wakeboarding and wakeskating as athletes and amateurs compete for cash and prizes.

Any given weekend here offers a peak into the sport’s popularity. Almost everyone I know with a boat has attempted to wakeboard at some point. Gone are the days when skiing was all the rage. I might as well pop a cassette tape in my walkman for all the relevance it has today. I’m a relic from days gone by dragging skis out. But those who’ve mastered wakeboarding are fascinating to watch. Which makes this a treat for spectators. There is tremendous support from the community. Expect a lot of them.

Admission is free. If you’d like to compete, registration is $50, available onsite beginning at 8am, and open to all skill levels. The action starts shortly thereafter with first rider out at 9am.

As host site, Eddie’s offers an excellent waterfront backdrop on land. Conveniently located at 643 Williamson Road in Mooresville, it’s easy to find with plenty of parking. Boaters can anchor near Reed’s Creek Cove to catch the action. Look for vendors, giveaways, and fun for the whole family.
