The cruise on Lake Norman features music, a silent auction, drinks and heavy hors d’oeuvres. It departs at 6:30 p.m. at Queens Landing, and ends at 10 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person, available at the United Family Services web site, www.unitedfamilyservices.org.

Kathryn Firmin-Sellers, director of the Lake Norman office of United Family Services, estimates from demographic projections that as many as 5,000 Lake Norman area residents are being abused. The United Family Services office in Cornelius offers long-term counseling to adult victims of domestic violence. Local counselors can also connect victims to UFS’s Charlotte-based victim advocates, who can help them file for restraining orders in court. UFS also operates the Shelter for Battered Women in Charlotte for those in imminent danger.
