Davidson College invites the public to a talk by Tom Daschle, former U.S. Senator from South Dakota and former U.S. Senate Majority Leader, on Wednesday evening, December 1. Daschle’s talk will be presented as the college’s annual Joseph T. Wearn Lecture. There is no charge to attend the talk, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Duke Family Performance Hall. Alternative Gift Fair<br />
Davidson College invites the public to its 18th annual Alternative Gift Fair on Sunday afternoon, December 5. Buyers can purchase relief and self-development goods, services and livestock for people in need throughout the world as alternative holiday gifts. Prices start at $4. There is no charge to attend the event, which runs from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Brown Atrium of the Alvarez College Union. <p><strong>Sunday, December 5</strong><br />
Vespers Service<br />
Davidson College invites the public to its annual vespers service of readings and carols on Sunday evening, December 5. College Chaplain Rob Spach will lead the Service. Lectors will be Assistant Dean of Student Life Ernest Jeffries, Pastor Elizabeth McGregor Simmons, President Thomas W. Ross, Dean of Students Thomas C. Shandley and Associate Professor of Religion Anne B. Wills. Readings will be interspersed with musical offerings by Davidson College musical ensembles. The offering from the service will support the Mooresville Soup Kitchen, a non-denominational Christian organization founded in 1987 to provide nourishing meals, fellowship and encouragement to people in need. Prelude music begins at 7 p.m. and the service begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Davidson College Presbyterian Church. The service is free of charge. For information call 704-894-2848.</p>

Artist Lecture<br />
Davidson College invites the public to a talk by artists Mitch Epstein and Susan Bell on Thursday evening, January 13. They will speak about their not-for-profit project What is American Power?, a new billboard and website campaign launched in the spring of 2010 that encourages responsible energy production and consumption. The lecture is presented in conjunction with the exhibition People, Places, Power: Reframing the American Landscape. <p>DavidsonCollege invites the public to view “People, Places, Power: Reframing the American Landscape,” an art exhibition which focuses on the complex interplay between personal, social, political, and economic forces in rural and urban America. The exhibition will be on display from January 14through February 25, and will feature works by contemporary photographers including Mitch Epstein, Lisa Kereszi, Victoria Sambunaris, David Hilliard, Andrew Moore, Ryan McGinley, David Taylor, Robert Bergman, David Maisel, and Alex Prager. <p><strong>Monday, January 17</strong><br />
King Day Celebration<br />
Davidson College invites the public to its annual annual Martin Luther King Day celebration on Monday, January 17. Events begin at 9 a.m. in the Brown Atrium of the Knobloch Campus Center with “King Day for Kids.” Children (grades k-6) are invited to participate a variety of activities including small group “read-ins,” arts and crafts, and a “First Book Speed Read” with local celebrities. Children’s Theatre<br />
The Davidson College Department of Theatre and Davidson Community Players’ The Connie Company invite the public to January 21 to 23 productions of the classic tale, The Emperor’s New Clothes, as retold by the late Rupert T. Barber, Jr. and directed by Melissa Ohlman-Roberge. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s story, this family-friendly comedy follows two scheming weavers who promise a vain and selfish emperor a new suit of clothes. The show is recommended forages 4 and up. All performances will be in The Barber Theatre of CunninghamTheatre Center. Staley Distinguished Christian Scholar Lecture<br />
Davidson College invites the public to hear Rev. Sam Wells, Dean of the Duke University Chapel and research professor of Christian ethics at Duke Divinity School, deliver the annual Staley Lecture on Monday evening, January 24. Wells will address the topic, “Places of Encounter: Hanging Out Where God Shows Up.” The lecture will explore how we live in a college setting in ways that are at once faithful and critically engaged. Wells has published six single-author works and many articles in both academic and popular journals. Prior to his appointment atDuke, he served four parishes as a Church of England priest in the post-industrial North East and in a socially disadvantaged neighborhood in East Anglia.
