A busy week in and around the area starts off with a blood drive at DCPC,  a reading by novelist Cris Mazza at Davidson College, and performances by songwriter Dan Bern at Birdsnest on Monday.  There’s also a lecture on the “Sexual Politics of Meat” by feminist author Carol J. Adams. There will be a Q&A with Ms. Adams on Tuesday and a vegan cooking workshop on Wednesday.

Davidson College’s production of the play “Kokoro” runs Wednesday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m and Sunday at 2 p.m. And there are two home basketball games this week: the Davidson Wildcat men play Georgia Southern on Wednesday and the Wildcat women play Georgia Southern on Saturday.

There are a number of concerts  to attend at Davidson College including a performance by a string band, a Davidson College Symphony performance and another by the Rhodora Winds Quintet. Also, there are two fund-raisers: Dinner at Davidson for the Davidson Trust scholarship program and the Green Ball to benefit the Davidson Lands Conservancy.

Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius was forced to postpone this weekend’s final performances of “Frozen” after a cast member was kicked by a horse. Shows are rescheduled to next weekend, Feb. 17-19. Also, Davidson Community Players’ Connie Co. holds auditions Saturday for its upcoming production of “Stuart Little” as well as summer teen and junior companies. And coming up this month: Davidson College’s production “Kokoro” which opens Wednesday, Feb. 16, and Davidson Community Players’ “Masterpiece” which runs Feb. 27 to March 13.

Davidson Reads starts off the weekend at Davidson College, where professors Alan Michael Parker and Shireen Campbell will be reading from their work. There’s a chance to learn how to build a wildlife habitat on your property in Mooresville on Thursday. On Friday there’s a pancake supper at Davidson Presbyterian Church and an Art Walk in Downtown Concord that will showcase art by almost 100 artists in 15 different locations. Saturday is the Davidson Farmer’s Market, a fundraiser for the Cornelius Animal Shelter and a fairy house festival in Huntersville where attendees can build their own houses. “Frozen” continues, playing Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

The slam poetry group FreeWord Poets starts off the weekend by performing at a meeting of the Charlotte Writers’ Club North Thursday night at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Also on Thursday are two educational sessions: the panel discussion “Iran: Addressing the Nuclear Threat” in Charlotte and an ethics forum about sex-trafficking in Latin America.  The Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville is hosting Going Red for Women Lunch & Learn, a program on women and heart health on Friday. On Friday, there’s a Spaghetti Supper at Davidson Presbyterian, Stargazing at Fisher Farm and a Zydeco concert. Read the full story
