Our community calendar this week includes a variety of autumn activities, from the Downtown Davidson Halloween March on Friday to the Amazing Maize Maze at Rural Hill to to a Ghost Walk at Latta Plantation. Friday night’s high school football schedule this week brings a big matchup between Hough and Mallard Creek, who are battling for the I-Meck 4A title. Lake Norman Christian School hosts its annual Autumn Blast on Saturday in Davidson, and several local middle-schoolers have organized their annual Think Pink Dog Show on the Davidson Green Saturday as well. It’s Family Weekend at Davidson College, where events include the opening of the theater department’s production of “A Month in the Country,” free concerts by the Symphony and Chorale, and the Jazz Ensemble, and a Saturday football game vs. Butler. The Lake Norman area calendar is a full one this week, from the Cornelius ‘Tawba Walk art crawl and the Flatiron Kitchen’s Fall Festival in Davidson to Statesville’s Carolina Balloonfest and the Lakeside Artists Studio Tour. The Organ at Davidson series continues at Davidson College Presbyterian Church Tuesday with Mary Louise Kapp Peeples. This Saturday also brings the Children’s Schoolhouse Fall Carnival on the Davidson Green. Meanwhile, the Amazing Maize Maze continues at Rural Hill and the musical “Baby” has more performances at Armour Street Theatre in Davidson.

Dozens of yoga fans will be on the Davidson Village Green Saturday afternoon for a Yoga on the Green festival that includes live music. Our Towns Habitat for Humanity hosts a Fall Festival Saturday morning at its Cornelius ReStore. Saturday night brings the Rotary Club’s annual Wine Spectacular fundraiser for area nonprofits. Meanwhile, the Davidson Community Players’ production of “Baby” continues its run on stage at Armour Street Theater. And two big fall events continue this weekend: the Amazing Maize Maze at Rural Hill and the Carolina Renaissance Festival off Poplar Tent Road. Details about these and other events below.

In the world of theater, the theme of a musical often is fantasy. Davidson Community Players’ current musical production “Baby,” while entertaining, actually deals with reality. The story revolves around three distinct sexual relationships revealing the strength of their emotions and love toward one another. The language in “Baby” is realistic, mature and at times very funny. Read the full story

Former White House Chief Information Officer Theresa Payton will talk about online safety for small business at The Business Center at South Main Square on Wednesday.

This week is shaping up as another busy one, with charity golf, tennis and paddle board events, including the Lake Norman Rotary’s Monday golf tourney at Peninsula Golf Club in Cornelius and the Jill Lake Pro-Am Tennis Tournament at River Run in Davidson on Friday. North Meck Woman’s Club meets on Tuesday and Wednesday, and blood drives are happening throughout the week. Wednesday is International Walk to School Day and ReadDavidson holds a book discussion about Ann Patchett’s “State of Wonder” on Thursday at the Davidson Public Library. Davidson College hosts its annual homecoming this weekend, and there are lots of free lectures open to the public on campus. Meanwhile, final performances of “The Smell of the Kill” are Thursday to Saturday at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius.

This weekend the play “Smell of the Kill” continues at Warehouse PAC in Cornelius, while youth from Davidson Community Players’ Connie Co. stage “The Tempest: Unplugged.” The Amazing Maize Maze is open again at Rural Hill and the Davidson United Methodist Church begins its annual Pumpkin Patch for Missions sale.  Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius is holding a BBQ Thursday benefiting Barium Springs Home for Children. First Baptist Church in Huntersville celebrates its Annual World Hunger Day on Saturday with a huge yard sale, bake sale, barbecue lunch, silent and live auctions, and more. On Saturday, the Know Your Farms stand will be open at Kenton Place and the Taste of Birkdale with a Twist of Fashion will be at the Birkdale Shopping Center.
