Our Events Calendar lists plenty of activities around the Lake Norman area this week, from public meetings to theater to basketball.  On Tuesday, the Smith Artist Series at Davidson College presents a performance by the Cashore Marionettes of Life in Motion. On Wednesday,  Davidson Green School holds another information session for interested families, and Green Drinks Lake Norman will hold their monthly meeting to discuss water reclamation and other topics. The opening production of the Davidson Community Players’ 2014 season brings a talented group of actors to the Armour Street stage to unravel an amazing story pulled from the archives of our nation’s history. Sidney Horton skillfully directs  “Flyin’ West,” written in 1995 by novelist-playwright Pearl Cleage and set in an 1898 farmhouse in Nicodemus, Kansas.  Read the full story

Several theatre productions open this weekend, including a student performance of “Les Miserables” and Davidson Community Players’ “Flyin’ West,” a play about African-American women pioneers in the American West. A plethora of musical offerings are on the calendar as well, including a performance by organist Tim Belk at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, and a recital by Davidson College professor and trumpeter Bill Lawing. Clever plays on words, mishaps, cultural twists, and compromising situations create an evening of laughter and surprises for audiences at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center during the company’s Third Annual 10-Minute Comedy Playfest. As The Warehouse’s fourth-season opener, “Eunice’s Beauty, Barber and Bait Shoppe” is a hilarious packet of seven 10-minute comedies, directed by two well-established figures of the area stage, Vito Abate and Sarah Provencal. Davidson basketball coach Bob McKillop will be honored for 25 years of coaching.

As January comes to a close the events calendar is filled with celebrations, meetings, and art events.
