This Saturday, Oct. 1, Summit Coffee and The Birdsnest music studio will host an 11-hour benefit concert for the Davidson Public Library’s “Got Brick?” campaign on the back porch at the coffee shop, 128 S. Main St. Also downtown Saturday is the Davidson Housing Coalition’s Festival for Hope and Housing, and Taste of Home food fest on the Village Green. Meanwhile, Community Arts Project in Cornelius is holding a “Taste of Art” fund-raiser Tuesday to support its art education programs. And The Charlie Daniels Band is scheduled to play at the 2nd annual Jail & Bail fund-raiser at The Brickhouse Tavern, supporting a NASCAR-related scholarship fund in memory of Brienne Davis. Our Davidson Weekend Calendar is a busy one this week, with meetings, music, the start of the Davidson Farmers Market’s winter tailgate markets, and the Rocky River Road Club’s annual fund-raising Polar Bear winter bike ride. Davidson College men’s basketball team is at home again Saturday afternoon, hosting league rival Appalachian State. And there’s plenty of music, starting tonight with the Rusty Knox Band at Summit Thursday. Summit also will feature a rare jazz night when Davidson guitarist Dennis Currier and his trio Terzetto play a CD release party Saturday. The college is slowly coming back to life, as students will arrive at the weekend for classes that resume Monday. And Davidson Farmers Market starts its winter tailgate markets Saturday morning, continuing every other week.

The town’s new Natural Assets and Tree Advisory Board holds its first meeting tonight at Town Hall. And Davidson Community Players opens a re-staging of its fall show “Almost, Maine” at Spirit Square in Charlotte Friday. Details below under “theater.” Read the full story

Saturday’s a busy day in and around Davidson, amid a weekend that includes music, meetings, theater, and events downtown. Guitarist/songwriter Rusty Knox plays tonight (Thursday) to lead off a weekend of local favorites at Summit Coffee. Hope the weather’s nice so we can enjoy the back porch! Friday morning, there’s a merchants’ meeting at the library. And Friday afternoon it’s a Party on the Porch at Campania Cafe.

On Saturday, Davidson Farmers’ Market returns next to Town Hall. John Marshall Custom Homes offers a tour of a certified “green home.” Local cable company MI-Connection hosts a Community Celebration on the Village Green, with info about new products.

On Sunday, Davidson United Methodist Church offers an afternoon concert of “Love and Folk Songs.” In Mooresville, a children’s theater production of “Once Upon a Mattress” continues all weekend. And in Cornelius, the Griggs Bluegrass Family plays at Cornelius Presbyterian Church. Details on those and other events below.

Bishop John Shelby Spong will be the focus of a discussion series that starts Tuesday.

This week’s calendar of events in and around Davidson includes the start of a month-long discussion series on the ideas of the liberal Christian theologian John Shelby Spong.

The week also features the local Ben & Jerry’s scoop shop defending its title in an ice cream competition, National Night Out, the start of a bluegrass concert series in Cornelius, a community celebration sponsored by MI-Connection, the Saturday farmer’s market and more.  Details on those and other events below.

It’s nearly the weekend and our calendar here in Davidson has sports, theater, music and more. Davidson Community Players’ production of Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park” concludes its run this weekend. Soprano sensations Annie Rhodes and Jenny Giduz will perform Saturday evening at the college.  Fundraisers this weekend include a pet show on the green benefit for breast cancer organized by 10-year-old Ally Miller, a blood drive at St. Alban’s, and a tasting extravaganza benefiting Habitat for Humanity.  All that plus live music at Summit Coffee and the Saturday morning farmer’s market. This Saturday, April 25, Summit Coffee in downtown Davidson will stage its third annual “Summit Cares” community outreach concert- 11 hours of live music, noon to 11 p.m., to raise funds and awareness for Autism Society of North Carolina. (See schedule below.)

Summit will donate a percentage of its sales throughout the day, and patrons are encouraged to make donations.

More than 20 musicians will be donating their time and energy to help in this effort. Expect to see: local regulars Billy Jones, Rusty Knox, Grey Revell, Ellie Merrell, Chas Willoman, Rick Spreitzer, and others. Read the full story
