This week features town meetings as well as entertainment events around the area. Monday night’s regularly scheduled Cornelius Board of Commissioners meeting will include a vote on Catawba Avenue improvements. On Wednesday, United Way of Central Carolinas will give a presentation on recommendations from the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute’s Community Needs Assessment. There’s also a Salsa & Merengue dance workshop at the Davidson public library on Wednesday. Davidson Community Players’ “Ragtime” starts up its second weekend on Thursday and there’s the ’80s Night in the Park in Cornelius’ Bailey Road Park on Saturday that features music from ’80s cover band 80z Enuff.

It’s spring break at Davidson College, and things on campus have slowed, but there’s plenty going on in and around Davidson. The Wildcats’ men’s and women’s basketball teams are in Charlotte for the Southern Conference championships Wednesday to Sunday. Meanwhile, On Saturday, ex-Wildcat Stephen Curry makes his first appearance at a basketball game in Charlotte since joining the NBA. Those events and more below. The 2010 Davidson Horticultural Symposium is all day Tuesday. Parents of future Hough High School students will hold an parent group organizing meeting Tuesday night and Charlotte Writers’ Club North hosts writer Rand Brandes on Thursday.

It’s a busy week ahead here in Davidson, punctuated by an action-packed weekend. Tonight at Town Hall, the town hosts another community planning forum focusing on citizen participation. Tuesday night, you can take in a words-and-music program combining the music of Bach with the writings of Albert Schweitzer in the next Organ at Davidson concert. There’s plenty of music at Summit, plus a free midday concert Friday at the college featuring Carolina Pro Musica. And Saturday is chock full, with the Community Rummage Sale, the farmer’s market, and a couple of fund-raisers for local organizations.

In sports, Davidson’s men’s basketball team plays South Carolina in Columbia Tuesday at 7 in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament. And the women’s soccer team hosts UNC Charlotte at the same hour, at Alumni Stadium, in the first of six spring games.
